We are internationally known for transformational research, strong industrial and public sector engagement, and for delivering sustainable solutions with impact.

We focus our research on many sectors of strategic importance for Wales, the UK, and the wider world, including high-value digital manufacturing, aerospace, autonomous vehicles, healthcare, and societal challenges such as sustainability and healthy ageing.

Our interdisciplinary Centre builds on the internationally renowned research excellence of Cardiff University’s Schools of Engineering, Computer Science and Informatics, and Psychology.

By bringing together this collective expertise under one banner, we can maximise research expertise through synergy, driving forward innovations that tackle some of the most pressing societal challenges.

The Operation aims to achieve 18% increase in research income from competitive and private funding sources and deliver the following long-term impacts:

  • Enhanced and new academic research capacity and strengthened critical mass in AI, robotics and human-machine systems
  • Delivery of game-changing transformative research (TRL 1-4)
  • Enhanced national and international standing for Wales and Cardiff University, establishing South Wales as an area of excellence
  • Accelerated collaboration with organisations outside academia
  • Development of Cardiff-based academics and industrial innovators, establishing the next generation of research leaders
